Most pond plants find the islands an ideal environment.
Even lotus and cattails perform beautifully in an island. The range
of plants is huge. (A list of tested plants is available with the islands).
The combinations are amazing –just combine a tall plant like variegated
cattail with golden creeping jenny and shortly you have a great focal
point in your pond. It is even possible to change the plants throughout
the season, for greatest effect. Just pop one plant out, pot and all,
and substitute another. The islands can float gently around the pond,
or they can easily be anchored wherever you want them.
If you have ever wanted to have an acid bog for carnivorous
plants like Pitcher Plant, but thought it was too difficult – this
is the ideal environment for them! They absolutely thrive in the islands.
Such garden plants as begonia, impatiens and coleus love
the islands. These don’t necessarily have to be in a garden pond –
you can use any planter and fill it with water, and enjoy bloom all summer
with your planted island. Best of all, watering is easy, and you don’t
have to worry about going away for a day or two! You may only have to
top up the planter 4-5 times in the summer. They are the ultimate in
very low maintenance, self-watering, container gardens.
Island planters come in sizes for every water garden, so
whatever size of pond or container garden you have; there is an island
to fit. We have lots more pictures, some with the islands full
of plants to give you ideas for your
own pond as well as individual pictures
of the empty islands.
