Tropical Shallow Water and Bog Plants

To add another dimension to your pond, these delightful tropical varieties are incomparable. Except for the ones with floating leaves, they can all also be grown as bog plants. Most can be wintered easily as houseplants indoors during the winter.


Photo (3K) Umbrella Palm Cyperus alternifolius
A great addition to any pond - the green stems are topped by a plume of narrow leaves in an umbrella shape. Easy to care for, this makes a great accent plant - 21/2 to 3 feet tall. 


Dwarf Umbrella Palm  Cyperus alt. gracillis 
A very diminutive form of umbrella palm growing 12 to 18 " tall. Dainty and attractive.


Egyptian Papyrus Cyperus papyrus 
The original species used by the ancient Egyptians to make paper. These will grow up to 7 feet tall with a graceful drooping plume of narrow leaves.


Mexican Papyrus Cyperus giganteus 
These are huge!.


Dwarf Papyrus  Cyperus haspans 
A small version with plumes that resemble dill in form. Very easy to grow and good in smaller ponds. Grows 1 to 2 feet tall.

Large, attractive deep green leaves unfurl and tremble gracefully in the wind. Grows to about 2 feet.

Graceful white blooms appear in late summer with flowers resembling a 'Peace Lily'. Best grown in very shallow water or slightly above water level. Grows 12 to 18" high.

Sturdy broad leaves arch from the central bulb of this outstanding marginal. The spike of white flowers, resembling those of an asiatic lily are a wonderful sight.

The graceful feathery stems trail across the surface of the pond and also under water.


Photo (3K) Water Canna 'Fiesta'  Canna glauca 
Large spear shaped leaves radiate from the crown of this plant, followed by spectacular yellow blooms spotted with orange from mid July until frost. Grows 3 to 31/2 feet. A great centrepiece or accent plant.

Four Leaf Clover  Marsilea mutica
A favourite of everyone who grows it - real four leaf clover leaves float on the surface of the pond as the trailing vine spreads across under the water. As the water warms, the variegated clover leaves get larger - up to 2 inches across. Also available in upright and green forms.


Aztec Arrowhead  Sagittaria montevidiensis  
A spectacular flower and arrowshaped leaves. Also available: Sagittaria graminea 'Crushed Ice' , a variegated variety.


Aquatic Morning Glory  Ipomea batatus 


Bluebell  Ruellia britonnia 
Pretty blue flowers. Also available in pink and dwarf varieties.


Butterfly Snowball  Gymnocoronis spilanthoides
