BURNS WATER GARDENS

Sword-Shaped Leaves

These plants all have tall, emergent leaves, most with a wide base and a pointed tip. They are not normally grown for their bloom. Though we do not sell the typical native cattail spotted in wetlands around Ontario, we do sell some interesting varieties.

A taller form with graceful thin leaves, 4 to 6 feet tall, can be grown in water up to two feet deep.

Golden Mace Cattail Typha stenophylla

Dwarf Cattail Typha laxmanii
A smaller Cattail grows up to 2 feet tall. Perfect for smaller ponds and tub gardens.

A cute little version of the cattail.

Variegated Cattail Typha latifolia var.
A variegated version with striking green and white striped foliage. A slow grower, this is a great accent in a larger pond.

Photo (3K) Sweet Flag Acorus calamus
Sometimes called sweet scented rush, the iris-like leaves smell delightful when crushed. The interesting green flower spike is inconspicuous, grows to 18" tall.

Very attractive green and white striped leaves provide a focus in the water garden. Not as strongly scented as the regular variety.

Dwarf Variegated Sweetflag Acorus gramineus variegata
A small sweetflag, with dark green and white striped leaves. Its small size makes it ideal for table top fountains.
