Reeds and Grasses

Reeds and grasses at the pond's edge give a vertical contrast to the horizontal plane of the pond.
 


Photo (3K) Variegated Manna Grass Glyceria aquatica variegata
Sturdy white and green striped leaves that stay variegated all summer. Up to 24" tall.


Green Rush Scirpus lacustris
The true 'bulrush' (not cattail). Tall green reeds (3 to 5 feet) are topped with a tuft of brown flowers in mid-summer. This rush gives a nice vertical accent to the pond. 


Zebra Rush Scirpus lacustris zebrinus
A variegated version of green rush, a striking foliage plant.  


White Rush Scirpus lacustris alba
A white version of green rush.  


Bebb's Sedge Carex bebbii
A nice sedge with a neat name. 


Dainty Burr reed Sparganium minima
Bright green leaves on a small plant, great for small ponds and tabletop fountains. The flower is a small white sphere with an interesting seedhead resembling a green burr. 


Giant burr reed Sparganium erectum
A larger version of the Dainty Burr Reed, grows at least 24" tall. 


Hairgrass Eleocharis acicularis
A bright green grassy plant grows well above or below water. Underwater, is a good oxygenator. 


Miniature Horsetail Equisetum scirpiode
This unique little plant resembles bamboo.  


Marestail Hippurus vulgaris
A bright green grassy plant. 


Ribbon Grass Phalaris arundinacea
A pretty striped grass with a pink flush in spring. 


Black Rush Scirpus atrovirens
A black seedhead makes this rush interesting. 


Bottlebrush sedge Carex comosa
A nice little sedge with an interesting seedhead. 


Sedge ' Ebony Spires' Carex spp.
A nice green sedge with black accent.
