Aquatic Plants
Aquatic
plants put the "garden" in Water Gardening! We offer a wide variety of
aquatic plants, from the underwater oxygenating plants to the star of the
show.... The Water Lily. We grow all of our hardy plants in our own
ponds. This ensures that they are ready for our cold climate, unlike plants shipped in from southern climates and sold from a greenhouse in Canada,
which can go into shock when they hit your cold pond water. Although greenhouse grown plants may bloom a couple of weeks earlier in May, they end up not producing as many
blooms in the summer as a Canadian grown plant. Any plant variety that we have labelled as
"hardy" has survived at LEAST three winters in our nursery. If you live in a colder area (we are Canadian
Zone 5, USDA Zone 4), our knowledgeable staff can suggest which plants will
survive best in your area.
Burns Water Gardens plants are sold in containers to ensure you get the best quality plant when you get it home. Our plants should be transplanted into large containers when you get them home to give them room to grow in the years to come. [Aquatic plants are fast growers and should be put in a minimum of an 6" pot to allow room for growth.] We have a variety of large plants already in decorative pots ready to go straight into your pond.
If you
live in or will be visiting Central Ontario, why not drop by, browse through our large selection
and walk around our ponds - we'd love to see you! Aquatic plants really suffer when barerooted and shipped through
the mail; we strongly recommend that you purchase your plants directly from the nursery. If distance is a problem, we do supply our
plants to a few other locations, look for the Burns Water Garden tag at your local nursery or garden center.
Hardy Waterlilies
When the plant is mature, small waterlilies have a spread of up to
three feet with blooms 3-5" in diameter. Medium lilies will have a spread
of three to six feet and blooms 4-6" in diameter. Large lilies will have
a spread over six feet and the blooms can be up to 8" in diameter. The
size your waterlily attains is also dependent on the size of the container
and the amount of fertilizer you use. Burns Water Gardens waterlilies are mature plants established in 6" or 8"pots, ready for transplanting
to 4 litre or larger growing containers.

Hardy Marginal Plants
Marginal plants typically grow in shallow water, 6" deep or less year-round. The
plants called "deeper water plants" need to be deeper to survive the winter,
you can drop them to the deep area of your pond just for the winter, or
leave them in the deep area year-round.

Bog or Moisture Loving Plants
These plants need to have their crowns above the water line but need
their roots to be constantly moist.

Tropical Plants
These plants won't survive the winter outside but most can be taken
in as "wet houseplants" for the winter.
