Floating Plants

These plants are an important addition to the pond, as they obtain nutrition directly from the water, while shading the water, thus helping control algae bloom. Most are killed by frost, but since they multiply quickly, are easily replaced each spring.
 
 


Photo (3K) Water Hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes
One of the most popular pond plants, with its bulbous leaf stems and occasional spike of purple flowers. Fish find the roots excellent for protecting eggs and spawn. One plant can multiply up to 20 times through the summer. 


Photo (2K) Water Lettuce or Shell Flower Pistia Stratiodes 
Velvety blue green leaves form a rosette while new plants often form from a runner to the side. This plant is happiest in partial shade.

An unusual water fern. It's round, fuzzy leaves form an alternate row as it floats on the surface. 


Photo (2K) Azolla Azolla caroliniana 
Often called fairy moss, this rapidly multiplying plant is great for fast cover. Sometimes turns red in cold weather, or shade. 


Duckweed Lemna minor 
A tiny hardy plant that is an excellent fish salad", especially in the spring.
